Is Reciprocal Linking A DO or a DON’T?

by admin · 0 comments

Back in the day, my friends and I who were new to the Internet would play a game where we would work our way around the world by clicking on links on websites. In those days, almost every site had a “links” page that linked to their friends, co-workers, family, or companies that they did business with and you would simply follow one link to the next as you worked your way from state to state, country to country. The links were put in place by individual webmasters who made agreements, usually via email, to put up reciprocal linking on their pages.

This old school method of getting traffic is still in existence today and there are companies who do it as their core business. Reciprocal linking is one of the best ways to get quality traffic to your site and is sometimes more effective than paying for high-cost search engine rankings.

The easiest way to do this type of linking is to find people you already know and ask they to put a link on their site to your site, telling them that you will do the same. Some people will and some won’t. But, if you can find just a few people who are willing to link to you, then you have multiplied your presence on the web. You can also follow-up with your links by using link checking tools.

The key to successful reciprocal linking is not the number of links you have, but the quality of links. I have had links posted all over the web, but one link – on CNN – brought in more quality traffic in one day than all the other links have over a lifetime. The key is to get your links posted on sites with volume and with visitors who are interested in products like yours. Avoid overdoing it, because there is a good chance that you can get too much of a good thing. The last thing you want to do with reciprocal linking is to make your site seem spammy.
