Learning About How a Link Exchange Operates

by admin · 2 comments

When you enter the wonderful world of websites and blogs, there is an old habit that has not changed since the early days, web rings. However, today web rings have taken on a new name, the ever popular link exchange. Of course, it is important to understand what this is and how it can work for you.

So, what do I need to know about the link exchange? Firstly, you only deal with web rings that are applicable to your website and topics. Then, you study what is involved in such linking and discover what this type of web ring can do for your website.

Check these out:
• website confederation
• similar to web rings
• you register your site with a centralized type of organization
• the organizations runs the exchanges
• your links and others are exchanged through HTML coding that each of you post on your own site
• such a link creates a banner type advertisement
• each ring member is credited for the number of banners displayed and used
• banners are good for quick advertising
• banners are not good as they take time to load
• not all web hosts allow banners
• banners take up a huge amount of server space
• controlling banner advertising is essential to keep the topic relevant to your site
• most banners are automatically generated and not monitored by anyone
• using such banners should be only on designated pages and not every page of your website to avoid slips in page rankings

The link exchange is very similar in many respects to magazine advertisements, but the difference is that you provide the space for free, normally. However, depending on what type of website you run, these are not always beneficial to you and may drive visitors away, instead of drawing them in. You have to evaluate whether or not such linking will work for your particular site.

I totally agree. Many of the horror stories that you hear about link exchanges are because people were going nuts with it, and had no plan with respect to getting links from other sites within the same topics or context.
